We're not only looking for ways to attract and retain the existing talent but also pushing ourselves to be a magnet for innovators from all over." To meet this vision, the town council has pursued and initiated partnerships with nearby colleges and local organizations to turn the community's history into a driving force for innovation.

Healthcare crisis line advocate Shawanda Harrison explains: "The resonating sense of brotherhood has proved effective in gravitating upward despite minority resource disparities and longstanding hurdles our town faced." There's, however, much work yet to be done to tackle the institutional barriers Wilkesboro faces, such as deicing disparities in access to care.
